Day 18

After experiencing some premature excitement last week, I was humbly reminded that the goal here is 2 lbs per week. I got excited last Friday about being down 9 lbs in 12 days. I must have been using some type of high school wrestler weight losing technique because I was down and then proceeded to start the week only down 5 lbs.

No biggie, and here’s why. Today is a good day. This morning I’m down 10 lbs! The reason this excites me is that this is more inline with proper weight loss. For me this is about 3 lbs per week. This weight loss is huge, even if it’s only 4%. Why is it huge? Clothes are starting to fit again.

I have kept around some old t-shirts that I really like, but they didn’t fit. Namely XL t-shirts and some L shirts. The XL t-shirts are not tight anymore. They fit pretty loose which is such a postive feeling. I wore the L t-shirt yesterday and was shocked that it was close fitting, but not super tight. One month ago there would be no way I’d fit in that shirt. And my pants belt? Well, let’s just say that having to add a notch to the belt is a good problem to have!

Watching the calories has been good. I’m now understanding the added benefit of exercising….I can eat more food! For example, a couple of days ago I was HUNGRY! I made the decision that I was going to walk some extra miles so I could enjoy the extra snack. I tallied up how many calories I was going to eat and figured how much walking needed to be done to zero out the extra food. It is an eye opener…sort of like how many hours at work it will cost me to pay for a month’s worth of Starbucks coffee (used to be 30 hours a month!).

Exercising has been going good too. I however realize that my body needs to pace itself and not get overused. That same snack from Day 16 and the subsequent 4 mile walk to work it off made jogging yesterday a little tough. I began the day super psyched to go out and slay it hoping to break my 15:00/mile pace. I got close, but my body was dead. I feel it today. I’ll do some more walking today, but for recreation and not at such a grinding pace. I figure I need to shed some more pounds and this will help the ol’ body’s muslces and joints recover quicker.

Overall, I am very pleased with my commitment and progress. Three weeks ago I would have loved to be 10 lbs lighter. Today I get to experience it after all the hard work and sacrifice. I’ll leave you with this. My wife said to me yesterday, “When I saw you walk in I thought how good you look.” Yep, damn right that motivates me. 🙂

Day 12

Slacker!

That’s what you can call me….when it comes to this blog, but not with my weight loss program! It’s been a very good week. I started off Day 7 by not counting calories. I have decided that Sundays will be days that I don’t necessarily count calories, but will try not to be a little piggy either. Our family enjoyed a wonderful BBQ in the warm sunshine. It was almost a perfect afternoon and evening just relaxing.

Here’s how the rest of the week went:

Day 8 — Spent the day at the Point Defiance Park & Zoo. Besides the walking around we did at the zoo, my daughter and I did our Monday jog in and outside the park.

Day 9 — Well…..this was my only “off” day. My buddy was visiting from out of town and I did a good job during the day watching my calories. However, we went out to dinner at The Crab Pot and enjoyed a hearty sized seafood meal. I’ve tried to find nutrition information on what I consumed, but I’ve had no luck. So, it is what it is.

Day 10–Was another good day. I saved most of my calories for dinner, which I’m not so sure I think I like. I thought it was a good idea, but filling my face at dinner time with over a 1000 calories actually was uncomfortable–which I guess is a good thing. Anyways, here’s how the day went.

Day 11– This was a lazy day in one sense. Ever since last week, I’ve held back on the pushups and situps. I know, your saying “he never complained about his stomach, just his arms”. Well, like I said I got a little lazy. So I kept my calorie intake fairly even through all meals and just took it easy while finishing some to-do list items around the house.

Day 12– This has probably been the best day this week. I woke up early (for me 7:30 am is early) and went and took care of my jogging first thing. Fortunately, there is a Starbucks located about 1.6 miles from my house–just a little bit shy of the 1.9 miles I jogged today!

So I started the day with a negative calorie count and even with this breakfast:

I was still a negative 36 calories! Of course on the way home, I had to get credit for the walk back to my neighborhood:

I have since had a small lunch and a huge dinner (I knew, sometimes I never learn!). Overall this has been a great week. And to prove it’s been a great week, check out these pics:

Day 5

Well, it seems that the push-ups I did on Tuesday are still bothering my arms. I was suppose to do some sets yesterday, but my triceps were killing me! When it hurts to lift a water glass and take a drink, that’s probably way too much pain for such little gain. Anyways….

Overall, things have been going really good. I’m staying pretty honest on the calories and doing my jogging with RunKeeper Pro. I’m using the Couch to 5K app to guide me through the nine weeks. I used C25K exclusively last year when I was getting into shape. I would use it again this time, but RunKeeper Pro just has too many advantages. So, I just use C25K as a resource to plan the runs.

Weight is dropping pretty good too. I love using LoseIt! It really helps me keeping track of the foods I eat and maintain the proper calorie intake. For example, today I had a Burger King Croissanwich w/ Bacon Egg and Cheese — 340 calories! Well, that was breakfast. Yikes!

Then, I went to see a movie today and got a medium popcorn without butter — 720 calories! I washed it down with a Diet Coke, but still…those two meals cost me over 1000 calories. Holy schnikes!!!

Knowing full well that I wanted to have a bigger cushion come dinner time (and possibly a snack) I decided to go for a walk — ended up walking 3.75 miles and shed almost 600 calories! Now that’s taking a little more control of my eating and exercising habits. Instead of making watching what I eat and exercising the enemy, I need to make better eating a habit and exercising a tool in my fight to lose 80 lbs!

RunKeeper Walk Day 5

So now, I’m done to 276 lbs as of this morning. I know the first week always shows the most weight lose so I need to mentally prepare for next week. All in all I’m feeling good about this change and looking forward to posting some new pics in a week or two showing some physical results.

After four days I've lost 4 lbs!

Day 3

Woke up this morning with a pain in my elbow. Not sure if it’s from spending ALL day yesterday on the computer getting the bills caught up and my PSYCH class finished or if it’s from the push-ups that hurt like  crazy….only did 22 total! At least my sit-ups were a little respectable: 50!!!

I’ve been doing good on the calories and can share a little success after two days:

Today begins a new adventure

Life has a funny way of getting your attention. Since losing my job almost two weeks ago I’ve been spending some time tying up some lose ends and getting my life and career back on track. One of those things was recovering old pictures from a burned out hard drive.

I found I was able to recover a small handful of pictures–pictures I thought I’d never see again. The one thing that I came to realize is that I’m fatter today then I was three years ago. Over time, little by little the pounds would be added and stick. Now I’ve been overweight and clinically obese for the last 14 years. I don’t feel obese, but I do feel fat. However, recent pictures confirm the diagnosis…I’m obese.

July 11, 2020

So today begins the change. I will be using six iPhone apps to help me through the process of losing 80 lbs.

I’ll periodically post on the blog my progress, my thoughts and feelings about changing my mindset and just overall how things are going. My goal is to not only lose the weight, but to inspire others that it can be done.
